This year CoLab INC kicked off its collegiate pitch competition at Oakwood Adventist University located in Huntsville, Alabama. The event was part of the business department’s Week of Entrepreneurship, where different local speakers came to share their entrepreneurial journey with OAU students. It also offered different workshops, activities and field trips to promote and encourage students to pursue their business ideas.
The event started in the evening of Tuesday, February 24th with a short worship thought offered by Kymone Hinds, speaker, author and life coach. Finalists then proceeded to pitch their ideas to the panel of judges composed of many local, renown entrepreneurs including Toni Eberhart, Terrel Davis, Ryan E. Poole and special guest, Kevin Welch. Pitches presented a wide range of ideas including apparel, cosmetics, skincare, cuisine and technology.
After much deliberation, the judges picked and awarded prizes to the top 3 pitches of the night as follows:
- 1st – Jillian’s Garden & Co. – $5,000 & 5 hour Mentorship
- 2nd – Urban Tee Company – $3,000 & 5 hour Mentorship
- 3rd – Jordan IT – $2,000

The first LaunchU 2020 Pitch Event at Oakwood Adventist University was a great success thanks to the joint collaboration of students, staff, community members, and the CoLab Inc Team. Julian Waddell, business professor at OAU shares, “The LaunchU event inspired us to build an entrepreneurship week around the event and from there, the entrepreneurship week positioned us to obtain enough support from our students and our community for our Entrepreneurship Center’s expansion.” CoLab INC is excited to work with OAU in the future to hoste more collegiate pitch competitions.
